Chief & Council

The Band Council of Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation serves 614 band members (as of 2023). Council serve two-year terms, elected to office by community members. Council members receive an honorarium for their services while in office.

Band Council members each concentrate on specific portfolios of duties and are not employed in any other capacity by the Band to discourage any conflicts of interest while serving the community.

You may qualify for compensation through the Pan-Canadian Claimants (PCC) compensation plan following a court-approved tobacco settlement in Canada.

Eligible individuals — or family members applying on behalf of someone deceased — may be able to receive financial compensation if certain conditions are met.

📌 Conditions include:
• Smoking qualifying tobacco products between 1950–1998
• Diagnosis between March 8, 2015 and March 8, 2019
• Canadian residency requirements apply
