Our community is made up of Mi’kmaq people who have lived in this area for thousands of years.

We are a small indigenous community located in Nova Scotia, Canada, near the southern shores of Antigonish Harbour, directly off of highway 104, about 15 minutes from the Town of Antigonish.

Our community is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, including forests, lakes, and rivers. We take pride in our culture and traditions, which have been passed down from generation to generation.

Our community is home to a variety of cultural events, including powwows, traditional feasts, and drumming circles. We also have a strong connection to the land, and many of our community members are involved in fishing, hunting, and trapping. Our language, Mi’kmaq, is an integral part of our culture, and we are working to revitalize it among our people.

Despite the challenges that we have faced as an indigenous community, we remain resilient and committed to preserving our way of life. We welcome visitors to our community and encourage everyone to learn more about our culture and traditions.

Summer is around the corner, and we have a lineup of experiential programs to introduce Indigenous youth to the possibilities available to them through STEAM learning. All accommodations including travel, meals and hotel are covered for participants. Spots are limited so make sure to register ASAP.

Check out this year's line-up of summer programs:

· Pre-collegiate Camp: A fun, experiential program that gives Indigenous youth in grades 10-12 a sneak peek of what life can look like while completing a post-secondary education. This year we're focusing on how STEAM can pave the way to entrepreneurship. This program is open to youth in Atlantic Canada.

· Oceans Camp: Indigenous youth aged 15-18 will enjoy STEAM activities at the Huntsman Marine Science Centre in St. Andrews, NB, followed by snorkelling through eelgrass meadows and sea-kayaking around the LaHave Islands. This program is open to youth in Atlantic Canada.

· Mlkiknewawti: Designed for Indigenous students entering grades 9-12 within Nova Scotia, this land-based learning program invites youth to explore STEAM concepts through hands-on experiences on the land.

Mi’kmaw Hospital Support
Tajikeimɨk is seeking Mi’kmaw Hospital Support Coordinators (4 parttime) in our new and developing organization. Reporting to the Program
Leader Cultural Safety and Community Care Transitions, the Mi’kmaw
Hospital Support Coordinator is responsible for providing support services
to Mi’kmaw and Indigenous community members, and their families, who
request support while receiving care in healthcare facilities in Nova Scotia.
What you’ll do:
• Provide Mi’kmaw language translation services for individuals, families
and healthcare professionals as requested.
• Support access to other Indigenous language services for individuals and
families when possible.
• Visit Indigenous clients in healthcare facilities and be a support person
for clients and their families.
• Attend medical appointments and consultations, as a support, when
• Support inclusion of cultural and traditional healing practices.
• Support and encourage the inclusion of Mi’kmaw culture, traditions,
ceremony into the healthcare environment.
• Advocate for the needs of clients and for care that is culturally safe,
wholistic and client-centred.
• Aid clients and families in navigating the Nova Scotia health system,
when requested.
• Support clients in accessing and receiving relevant health information
specific to their patient care plan.
• Assist clients to access necessary services and programs to support their
health needs.
• Inform and refer families to appropriate resources, programs and services
available in hospital.
• Connect with patients’ and families’ home communities, to assist with
funding, support, discharge plans and communication.
• Provide support to patients and families by helping them obtain services
through Non-Insured Health Benefits, Jordan’s Principle and/or other
organizations, as requested.
• Provide support to the shared responsibility for patient care, with other
members of health care teams in community and in hospitals.
• Work in collaboration with Mi’kmaw Indigenous Patient Navigators and
other Mikmaw hospital coordinators.
• Provide support, and work in collaboration with, other healthcare providers
and staff members regarding the provision of culturally safe care.
• Monitor and track monthly program statistics as part of regular
reporting to the Program Leader.
• Follow up with discharged clients for feedback on overall hospital
experience as part of regular reporting to the Program Leader.
• May participate on hospital/health-related committees, as part of
advocacy efforts.
• Must be able to travel within your designated service area.
• Attend meetings with Program Lead and other Hospital Support
• Monthly staff meetings with Tajikeimik team.

• Manage multiple priorities and ensure clients’ needs are met.

Your qualifications:
• Experience working with First Nation/Indigenous communities, First
Nation service delivery organizations, and applicable government
programming, etc.
• Experience working in a fast-paced environment.
• Fluent in Mi’kmaw language is a requirement for positions in Halifax and
Cape Breton.
• Fluent in Mi’kmaw language is an asset for positions in all other areas of
Nova Scotia.
• Knowledge of Medical Terminology would be an asset.
Additional requirements:
• Work environment is mostly in hospital settings.
• Experience using the Microsoft suite of products.
• Travel within Nova Scotia.
• Work a flex schedule due to the nature of this position.
• Must have a valid driver’s license with access to a vehicle.
• Must provide recent and clear criminal record, vulnerable sector, and
child abuse registry checks.
